The most minimalistic phone ever
Okay, that’s probably an exaggeration. But, dear reader, I present to you a challenge: how many apps do you have on your phone? Is it less than 50? I know people who may even have 100 or more apps, and most of them are completely useless.
Ten apps for restaurants they never visit anymore. 15 apps that came with the phone, which they have never opened. Three apps they needed a year ago and just never deleted. Folders and folders of apps, and they couldn’t name half of them. Myself, I have 33. And that includes the phone and messages “apps”, the camera and photos, settings, notes, the clock, necessary apps such as for banking and email, maps, etc etc.
Now, I am not going to act like there is some kind of moral benefit in this. In truth, I developed the habit of having minimal apps when I first got a phone and to free up space for Genshin Impact (Seriously, 50-something GBs for a mobile game! How do they get away with this stuff??). But recently I was paring down and reorganizing and I hit something. Widgets. Seriously, widgets are the greatest thing to happen to phones ever. I don’t even have to open an app, it can just display whatever information I was going to ask for. Brilliant.
Anyway, I put all my widgets on one page and set that to be the “home” page. Which is a slight improvement but not worth a whole blog post. But then…. I realized I can put widgets on the lock screen! Seriously, I could kiss whoever thought to add this feature. Now, 80% of the things I would consult my phone for, I don’t even have to unlock it!
“Oh, but what if someone steals your phone and now they can see the widgets?” Look, I like privacy as much as the next person, but if anyone was that motivated to spy on me, I have bigger problems. And my calendar entries are written in shorthand that wouldn’t mean anything to anyone other than me anyway, so good luck ;).
Anyway, before you pay out the nose for a dumbphone (why are some of them retailing for 899$???), try minimalizing the one you already have.
